Minister of Economy: The Increase in Electricity Prices for Farms Is Not Intended to Exploit Farm Owners

24 Mar 2022

The Minister of Economy, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, affirmed that the provision of electricity and water to farmers is carried out according to economic bases, and that Etihad Water and Electricity relies on government policies and budgets, not on individual decisions, in its tariffs.
In response to a parliamentary question by the First Deputy Speaker Hamad Al Rahoumi regarding the increase in electricity prices for citizens who own farms, the minister said that the decision is not intended to exploit the consumer, but rather has technical and economic considerations.
The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohamad Al Mazrouei, had said before Parliament earlier that the aforementioned decision was taken by the UAE Cabinet, stressing that the government dealt with this file as a matter of national security aimed at achieving a set of strategic goals, as the focus is on subsidizing water while cancelling electricity subsidies, which provides arable water for farm owners to serve the quality of their products on the one hand, and provide sustainable solutions for food security in the UAE on the other.
